[Dec 2009] Maureen Graham works magic with Soft Sculpture: Maureen is an Umcebo crafter with a special skill for 3D Soft Sculpture. That is artworks made from fabric and recycled items using embroidery, sewing, applique and tapestry techniques. Maureen is working on 3D soft sculptures that will form part of an exhibition planned for 2011. |

[Dec 2009] Moses Mabhida Stadium Art / Artists Launch Function: ![]() Mululeki Madlala (Umcebo Shop Manager) and Douglas Chepeta (Senior Crafter) toasting enjoying a photo opportunity on the pitch at the Stadium. ![]() Pivot Mercury Article On Tuesday 15th December, representatives of Umcebo Trust were invited to attend a special function at the Moses Mabhida Stadium together with other artists and representatives who also contributed art to the Stadium. The aim of the function was to present the art to the press and relevant parties and to allow the artists to view their work installed and to network with each other. The event was a fantastic opportunity to speak to other artists, the press and generally to enjoy some social time after all the hard work done on the art work. [Dec 2009] Daniel Goldstein "Medicine Man" Installation: The well known San Francisco based artist Daniel Goldstein commissioned Umcebo Trust to produce an armiture and some beaded pieces for his latest installation dealing with the subject of HIV/AIDS and ARVs. The work deals with the issues surrounding the artists reality of living with HIV/AIDS and the consequences of ARV treatment on the body and soul. Here are some pictures of Daniel and his installation at The Castle in Cape Town where it is being exhibited. Special thanks to Daniel for this prestigious work; and also thanks to Carol Brown and Gabrielle Brown (Art Consultants); Jill Derderian (US Consul General - Durban), and Megan Ellis (Information Officer, US Consulate - Durban).

[Nov 2009] The Heritage Awards trophy commission: We were commissioned by KIZO Gallery to produce beaded trophys to be given to the recipients of the 2009 Heritage Awards.

[Nov 2009] Hills Pet Nutrition Christmas Commission: Hills Pet Nutrition commissioned us to make beaded Christmas decorations to be attached to their cards this holiday season to send to clients.

[Nov 2009] Recycling Recognition Medal - Afripack: Afripack (previously DLC - Diverse Labeling Consultants) have long been donators of scrap plastic to Umcebo Trust for use in various craft items as part of our recycling programme. We use the plastic for weaving baskets, mats and even garments. The Institute of Packaging SA recently awarded Afripack a Recognition Medal for their part in making "Functional Art from Waste". We are proud of our relationship with Afripack and hope to continue exploring recycling opportunities with them in the future. |

[Nov 2009] Beaded Toys: Umcebo Crafters are busy working on a beaded toy range. These unique items are an alternative to the mass produced (Made In China) items one can find in any toy store. The toys are also suitable as quirky ornaments and collectibles. |
