BASA (Business Arts South Africa) awarded the Umcebo Trust mentor Gary Ninow "Mentor of the Year" recently.
The Trust was introduced to Gary Ninow three years ago by BASA as part of their Business Mentorship programme.
Since that initial introdution Gary has remained a valuable sounding board and informal advisor on various matters at the trust. We consider him a great resource and asset that always makes himself available to offer advice when we need it.
Andile Ncontsa (Head of Old Mutual Foundation) kindly received the award on our behalf. Old Mutual are currently our core funders.

[June 2009] Limpopo Art and Craft Association (LACA) Craft Training Workshop:

Our friends at LACA joined us for a five day beadwork training course (25th to 29th June 2009). Arlette Franks (Director of LACA) selected five crafters. The idea being that they come to Durban for five days, and train in bead and wirework skills. During this time they would also use the work in the shop to inspire them, and they would take the skills learnt, and find their own craft voices.
George, Martha, Kate, Knowledge and Muofhe spent the week with us, and then returned to Limpopo with tool kits, materials and finnished pieces of beadwork. We hope that in the future we can build onto this initial programme, with follow-up workshops. Our thanks to Arlette and the crafters for their support and encouragement.
